The Art of Giving

Giving has always been part of how we connect with the people around us, but these last couple of years it feels more special and intentional. In a time when many interactions are quick or digital, giving and receiving something physical asks us to really reflect on what that means and also the impact it has.

As the years pass, we are seeing more and more value in our communities. Our friends, neighbours, and the familiar faces we cross paths with on our commute or our regular visit to that shop we really like. A gift doesn’t need to be elaborate to matter. A handmade object or a handwritten card carries time and attention. Sometimes it's these gifts that mean the most and we treasure them for years. We may even tuck them away in a memory box, or display it on a shelf at home so everyone can 'oooh and ahhh' at. A handwritten coupon, a beaded bracelet, a painting...

Somehow even the act of wrapping plays an important role. It allows us to get excited about giving it to that special person, we imagine their reaction and hope they'll love it as much as we appreciate them. Whether it’s for a close friend or a neighbour you see only now and then, these small gestures really make all the difference and help maintain these connections that hold communities together. It lets us really tap into joy and gratitude.

The art of giving isn’t about grand gestures or perfection. It’s about truly seeing the people around us and choosing to show up for them in simple, thoughtful, loving ways.

What's the best gift you've ever received? And what's been the one you feel the best about giving?

Warm wishes,

Ellen
